Careerlink on iPhone 1The AIM Institute of Omaha, NE is a non-profit organization focused on bringing out the best of technology in the mid-west.  Amongst their many areas of involvement, they have ran a very popular job site called Careerlink.com. For as long as I can remember, they have been running this very popular job resources site.  So when they approached ninthDivision to do an iPhone App for Careerlink.com, I didn’t hesitate to answer yes.

The Story

ninthDivision worked with the AIM institute to develop a hybrid style iPhone App for their Careerlink.com brand.  A hybrid app is a native application when you first load it, then when a search is entered it will open the embedded Safari browser with the search results.  The search results are formatted for the iPhone browser, so the experience is similar to that of a native app.  The AIM Institute wanted to measure the success of the app first, so they knew how to make it a complete native iPhone App experience.

The choice of having a hybrid app can be a good way to establish a precense in the App Store.  AIM Institute already had an established web presence and not to mention a mobile site already in place.  They only needed to build a new template to handle the iPhone styles for the output.

To speed up their web development efforts, ninthDivision was also contracted to conduct a half day training session on iPhone Web Development.

Features

We focused on features that we already in place within the website.

  • You can search for any job title or keyword: iPhone Developer, Ruby on Rails, Job that Doesn’t Suck.
  • Uses the embedded Safari browser, with progress indicator and page titles.
  • The location and date are the fancy selection list views.  (Just like in Calendar when selecting a date).
  • When you touch the I in the upper right, a modal window is displayed with more information on AIM institute.

Availability

As of the date of this writing the App isn’t available on the App Store.  We’ll make an announcement when it is.
