What is iPhone and iPod Touch Identifier Number?
All iPhone and iPod Touch devices have a unique number which identifies each and every device (uniquely). It is a super long alpha-numeric number consisting of 40 characters. If you can memorize this number, you officially have too much time on your hands. Each number uniquely identifies each and every device Apple produces; just like the MAC address for your network card.
Why must I share it?
When working with a developer building software, chances are the application will need testing prior to the App Store. All iPhones and iPod Touches can only install software from the App Store, unless you are working with a developer testing beta software. In order to install beta software in development, this iPhone Identifier number is needed. Without, the software can’t be installed on your device.
How to get it?
- Connect your iPhone or iPod Touch
- Open up iTunes
- Locate and Select (Highlight your device under the Devices section.
- The iPhone summary page will be shown. It displays the device name, capacity, software version, serial number and phone number; by default. You are probably all familiar with it; but here is a screenshot.

- Now, reveal the Device Identifier number by clicking on the Serial Number label. It doesn’t prompt you and or change your cursor, so it might not feel like clicking on the serial number is an option. Here is a screenshot of what you will see when you click on it.

- With your Identifier Number now displayed, copy it to the clipboard. EDIT -> COPY.
You know have your iPhone/iPod Touch’s Idenifier number ready to be copied to a an email, message board or where ever you need to paste it to get to the developer. Or maybe you are the developer, so fire up iPhone Developer Protal and copy that number into the identifiers listing and get your beta software in the hands of the testers!
