Touch Cam is now FREE

After about a month in the App Store, we have made Touch Cam Free!

Many of you may know that Touch Cam was a fun project Hasani and I did prior to him joining forces with me at Ninth Division.  We set out to solve a problem quickly; to improve recording videos on the iPhone.  Two ways we did that – by decreasing the time it takes to begin recording and by creating a better way to view all the videos.  Then we released it for a buck and as it turns out a good handful of other folks thought liked it too.

One of the features we believe make it worth a dollar (the automatic synchronization with the iPhone’s video library), is getting some resistance with Apple.  Earlier this week Hasani submitted version 1.2.  That was rejected on the grounds of …

For security reasons, iPhone OS restricts an application (including its preferences and data) to a unique location in the file system. This restriction is part of the security feature known as the application’s “sandbox.” The sandbox is a set of fine-grained controls limiting an application’s access to files, preferences, network resources, hardware, and so on.

Touch Cam doesn’t do anything differently than your Mac or PC does when you connect it via USB and get the videos or photos off it.  We are only reading that directory to keep things in sync and writing to the library via the API.  We will be working with Apple on this in the next week.

This rejection got the both of us thinking; no matter the outcome of the version 1.2 submission… lets make it free.  If we do in deed have to remove the syncing (and thus the table listing of videos sorted by date) then it’s not worth a dollar to us.  If they allow us to keep the syncing in there, we’ll still make it free (but we’ll be much happier with the app).  We’ll keep you all posted on what is going to happen.

Another version will be released shortly (no matter the outcome of the rejection) with some great improvements to load times, camera start times, more language support, etc.  No we are not giving up on it!

Thanks to the the early support.  Anyone how payed for it, just know that you helped another Omaha startup and we’ll make it up to you ;) .

If you have an iPhone 3GS… go grab it – IT’S FREE
