Welcome 2010 and Happy Birthday [9D]

Posted on 31. Dec, 2009 by andy in News

With the year 2009 about done, Ninth Division is getting ready to embark in some exciting new territory.  Read my thoughts as I reflect on 2009 as I compare 9D to starting a band.  This past year was great and I couldn’t ask for a better start to a business.  2010 is already going to [...]

Year Zero; Complete.

Posted on 31. Dec, 2009 by andy in About

Year Zero? Isn’t that a Nine Inch Nails album? Yeah. That’s not at all what this update is about. This past year for Ninth Division has not been the first year of business. It’s been the incubation time for the company. 2010 is a time for true birth and growth. Year Zero was an album from a band that I truly admire… and Ninth Division is as much a business as it is a band.

Being in a band to make it somewhere is just like running a business that you want to carry into the years to come. When I look at how I run Ninth Division, I think about it as if it were a band.

Surviving the Hacker News effect

Posted on 23. Nov, 2009 by andy in Apps

When the story hit the front page, I was receiving such an amount of requests for this article I couldn’t even keep the server going. It is running as a virtual machine and at many points the server peaked above 80.00 on it’s load average. It was so high that the host server shut it down countless times. This comes to hard lesson #1… CACHE! Now this site (not surprisingly) is ran using Wordpress. Luckily that means there are tons of great caching plugins. Use one! I had reminded myself about three times to do that in September and October, but found excuses not to. It’s simple and it saved my site.

What does Ninth Division mean?

Posted on 16. Nov, 2009 by andy in About

Every business name has a story.  No matter how complicated or simple the name of the business or product, it has a story.  Many folks over the last year have asked: “What does Ninth Division mean?”  This last week on Wednesday was Veterans Day and it felt like the perfect opportunity to tell the story.
I [...]

RIP Redneck Jokes and More

Posted on 30. Oct, 2009 by andy in Apps

Jokes are great! They can be a great way to break the ice, start the day, introduce yourself to someone new, get made fun of, or in Ninth Division’s case get yourself in unwanted trouble. Do you remember the Redneck Jokes application we made back in Spring of this year? Of course you do. Sadly, as of Monday, it is no longer available and here is why…

Quick recap of Heartland Developers Conference

Posted on 22. Oct, 2009 by andy in Events

The Hearland Developers Conference (HDC) is the biggest technology conference in the area. It has been in Omaha for six years now and this year it was held at the QWest center in downtown Omaha. There was two great parties they put on, but the developers jam at the Slowdown was a riot. Thanks everyone for putting on all the great festivities. Below is a video of Joe Olsen, the director of Heartland Developers Conference talking more about the conference.

The midwest regional Heartland Developers Conference is coming up Thursday and Friday.  As I mentioned before I’ll be speaking at two sessions for iPhone development.  I hope to see many familiar and new faces there.  I plan on attending the pre-party and the developers Jam on Thursday night so lets have a drink on HDC [...]

BarCamp Omaha 2009 was a success

Posted on 08. Oct, 2009 by andy in Events

As you all know, ninth Division sponsored BarCamp Omaha this year.  I provided enough BrainToniq for everyone to try and enough soda to fuel downtown Omaha for a night.  The best part is I surprised myself and had a blast!

It was last Saturday October 4th in downtown Omaha at the Nomad lounge.  In typical BarCamp [...]

I learned a ton at 360iDev

Posted on 06. Oct, 2009 by andy in Events

Last week, myself, Hasani Hunter and over 300 other iPhone developers came to Denver to learn from each other.  It was on the third floor of a cool hotel called The Curtis. The conference was packed with three days of sessions and at times there were as many as four sessions going on at once.
There [...]
